Makeup Boxes

Makeup boxes for palettes, kits and gift sets need to stop flat, heavy palettes sliding and scuffing their own lids. Dividers or a fitted tray keep every compact, brush and palette exactly where you positioned it. Folding cartons handle most kits; rigid suits premium sets kept long after the product runs out, and takes 20 business days rather than the 8–12 for folding carton builds.

Makeup Boxes Built for Multi-Piece Products

For many color cosmetics brands, the makeup box holds the most expensive thing they sell: a palette with a matching brush, a full-face kit, a holiday set with five or six products. A makeup box here is the outer packaging for those multi-piece products, folding or rigid, almost always with something inside to keep the pieces apart. Buyers include brands launching an eyeshadow palette, makeup artists selling a signature kit, beauty retailers building their own sets, and PR teams sending launch packages to editors and creators. Because these products are often bought as gifts or collected, the box tends to be kept long after the products inside are used, which changes how much it's worth spending on.

Makeup Box Specs: Rigid Board, Trays and Dividers

Makeup kits run in two builds. Gift sets and premium palettes use board that won't flex or crush, wrapped in printed paper; core palettes and everyday kits use coated folding board.

Spec Folding Rigid
Board SBS, 18–24pt Grayboard, 2–3mm, wrapped
Interior Card tray or dividers Card or foam tray
Closure Tuck or sleeve Lid-and-tray, magnetic or drawer
Arrives Flat Assembled
Lead time 8–12 business days 20 business days

Tray cavities are cut to each piece at about ±0.5–1mm, so a palette, a brush and a compact can sit at their own depths in the same tray. Brushes are measured at the ferrule and the widest point of the head.

Why Makeup Kits Are Built Around a Tray

On a kit, the cut trays for multi-piece kits are designed first and the outer box is sized around them. The layout decides how the product reads when it opens: the palette centered and largest, brushes in a row, smaller items grouped to one side. That arrangement is the kit's first impression, and it has to look the same on the thousandth box as on the sample. A tray also lets one outer size serve several kits, with only the insert changing between them. The exception is a single palette sold alone, which needs only a sleeve or a snug carton and no tray at all. Spending on an insert there buys nothing the customer will notice.

Finishes That Suit a Makeup Kit Kept After Use

Kits that get kept justify finishes a throwaway carton doesn't. On rigid boxes, the printed wrap can take soft-touch lamination, hot foil and embossing, and a magnetic closure makes repeated opening feel solid. On folding kits, full-color print with spot UV on the logo gives most of the effect for less. Print inside the lid is popular on kits, since the customer sees it every time the box opens. What to skip: soft-touch on a dark kit without anti-scuff film, since the box will be handled for months, and very detailed foil artwork across a large lid, which tends to look busy rather than expensive. One well-placed finish usually beats three competing ones.

Makeup Boxes for Holiday Sets, PR Kits and Palettes

Eyeshadow and face palettes sold alone use a slim carton or a sleeve. Full-face kits from makeup artists combine a palette, brushes and a lip product in a rigid box with a tray. Retailers and brands building seasonal gift sets run a limited outer design over a standard tray, so the tooling carries over from one year to the next. PR and influencer packages are often the most elaborate boxes a brand makes, produced in short runs for launch day. Travel and mini kits use a smaller tray with sample sizes, usually in a folding carton to keep the cost per unit low enough for a gift-with-purchase.

Makeup Box Timing: Folding at 8–12 Days, Rigid at 20

Plan around the build. Folding kits are ready 8–12 business days after proof approval; rigid boxes take 20 business days, flat, however complex the tray. For a holiday or launch date, that gap is worth writing into the calendar early. Rush is available on both at extra cost, quoted upfront. Send the pieces, or their dimensions, and we lay out the tray, confirm sizes in writing and proof it with your artwork. Design help is free. The minimum is 100 boxes, samples are free above 10,000, and shipping is included. Quality is checked at three stages, and a run that doesn't match its approved proof is reprinted at our cost.

What brands say about this box

Answers before you have to ask.

How do you stop palettes sliding inside the box?

With dividers or a fitted tray. Palettes are flat and heavy for their size, so they slide and scuff their own lids if left loose. A cut tray holds each one and keeps a multi-piece kit looking arranged when the lid comes off.

Should makeup boxes be rigid or folding?

It depends on price point. Folding cartons with a tray handle most palettes and kits well. Rigid suits premium sets, gift boxes and anything kept after the product runs out. Rigid takes 20 business days rather than 8–12.

Can makeup boxes hold mixed product sizes?

Yes, that's what a cut tray is for. We lay out cavities around your actual pieces, so a palette, brushes and smaller items each sit in their own space rather than sliding into one heap.

How long do makeup boxes take to produce?

Folding builds take about 8–12 business days from proof approval. Rigid kits and gift sets take 20 business days. Rush is available on both at a premium we'll quote first.

What's the minimum on makeup boxes?

100 boxes for folding builds and trays. Design help is unlimited and free, which is worth using here since kit layouts usually take a few rounds to get the cavity spacing right.
