Custom Shoulder/Neck Boxes
Custom shoulder neck boxes use an inner collar standing slightly proud of the base, without magnets, so the lid seats over it and meets resistance as it lifts. That slow, deliberate open is much of what prestige buyers pay for; mid-market products get most of the effect from a standard lid. Linen and textured wraps suit the rigid core. Allow 20 business days for rigid.

Collar-Lift Boxes Without a Magnet
Some prestige packaging closes with a magnet, some with a ribbon. A shoulder neck box closes with nothing but its own geometry. The lid fits snugly over a raised inner wall, and that fit keeps the box shut on a shelf and in a carrier bag without any hardware hidden in the board.
Brands choose it for exactly that reason: no magnet to pull a lid out of line, no mechanism to wear, and a closing feel that comes from fit alone. Buyers are usually fragrance houses, watch and jewelry brands, premium skincare lines and limited editions, where the box is expected to outlast the product. The magnetic version of this collar build is a separate product in the range.
Grayboard Core, Collar Wall and Wrap Choices
| Spec | Shoulder neck build |
|---|---|
| Core | Rigid grayboard, 2–3mm |
| Parts | Base, inner collar and lid, each wrapped |
| Wraps | Printed paper, linen or textured specialty paper |
| Closure | Friction fit over the collar, no magnet |
| Tolerance | ±1mm on the box, tighter on any insert |
| Lead time | 20 business days for rigid |
The structure is a wrapped grayboard core assembled from three parts. The collar sits inside the base and stands above its rim, and its height decides how much of the base the lid covers and how much grip the open has. Because the fit is the closure, the lid's internal dimensions are cut to the collar's outside, not to the product.
Friction on the Lift as the Reason to Pay
The point of paying for a collar is the open. A lid that slides off a standard base comes away at once. A lid seated over a collar meets friction and rises gradually, which turns the first few seconds with the product into a small occasion.
That matters most for bottled fragrance priced on presentation, where the buyer judges the bottle partly by the box it arrives in, and where the box often stays on show afterward. A magnetic closure gives a firmer, audible snap. The collar build gives a quieter, more gradual release, and there's no magnet to align during assembly. It's a deliberate choice: if the open isn't part of how the product sells, the collar is spend nobody will notice.
Wrapping Lid, Base and the Visible Collar
A shoulder neck box has three surfaces to finish instead of two, and the collar is the one buyers forget. It shows as a band once the lid lifts, so a contrasting wrap there, whether a different color or a textured paper against a smooth lid, gives the open a second moment.
Outside, rigid wraps take offset print, foil stamping, blind embossing, debossing and spot UV on paper wraps. Linen and textured papers take foil and embossing well but not fine printed detail, so keep small type on paper. Leave the lower edge of the lid free of artwork that would show wear; it brushes against the collar every time the box is opened and closed.
Fragrance, Watches and Keepsake Launches
Shoulder neck boxes go where the box will be kept rather than recycled. Fragrance houses use them for eau de parfum and gift sets. Watchmakers use them as presentation cases with a fitted insert, and jewelry brands for matched necklace and bracelet sets. Skincare lines reserve them for a hero serum or a limited edition.
Collectors' editions, award pieces and corporate gifts follow the same logic, where boxes buyers keep on a dresser carry the brand for years after the product is used up. The common link is a product whose price already includes its presentation, and a customer who expects the box to feel as considered as the thing inside it.
Twenty Days for a Rigid Collar Build
Rigid builds take 20 business days from proof approval, so plan a launch date backward from that figure, counting from the day you sign off the proof rather than the day you place the order. If a date can't move, rush is available at a stated premium, quoted before you commit.
Design help is free and unlimited, including working through the collar height and a contrast wrap with you before the proof is drawn. Your quote covers dies, plates and setup, with nothing added once you've approved it. If the bulk run doesn't match the proof you signed off, we reprint it at our cost. The minimum is 100 boxes, and shipping is included in the price.

What brands say about this box
They live there rather than here, where we can't edit them, delete them, or pick which ones you get to see. That is exactly what makes them worth reading.
Read all reviews on Trustpilot(opens in a new tab)Answers before you have to ask.
What does the shoulder or neck actually do?
It's an inner wall sitting slightly proud of the base, so the lid seats over it rather than onto the base directly. That creates resistance as it lifts, which makes the open feel slow and deliberate.
Can shoulder neck boxes be wrapped in texture?
Yes. Linen, textured papers and specialty wraps all work over the rigid core, and that tactile surface is often what separates a premium box from a well-printed one.
Are shoulder neck boxes worth the cost?
For prestige products, generally. The slow reveal is much of what buyers are paying for. For mid-market it's harder to justify, and a standard lid achieves most of the effect.
How long do shoulder neck boxes take?
20 business days from proof approval, since rigid board is cut, wrapped and assembled rather than shipped flat. Rush is available at a stated premium.
What's the minimum on shoulder neck boxes?
100 boxes. Allow 20 business days rather than 8–12. Free samples are available on orders above 10,000 units if you want to check the collar fit first.
