Custom Packaging Sleeves
Custom packaging sleeves wrap a plain base, so the box underneath stays generic and you reprint only the sleeve when artwork changes. They cost considerably less than full boxes and need no new box tooling. A sleeve brands and holds rather than protects, so protection comes from whatever sits underneath. Sleeves are among the cheapest formats to trial, from 100 sleeves.

One Plain Base and as Many Sleeves as You Have Products
Most brands that order sleeves have more products than box designs they want to manage. A tea range with eight blends, a soap line with a new scent each season, a gift set that changes for every holiday: all of them can sit in one plain base, with the printed sleeve doing the identifying. This page is the starting point for the sleeve as a format. It covers the narrow band and the full wrap, and the three stocks the family runs on: lightweight paper, coated cardboard and food-safe stock. If you already know which of those you need, the dedicated pages go further. If you don't, the sections below will narrow it down.
Sleeve Widths, Stocks and Fit to the Base
A sleeve is a printed wrap, open at both ends, that slides over a base. It is commonly run on coated board for sleeves that slide on and off, with paper and food-safe stock as the alternatives.
| Spec | Options |
|---|---|
| Width | Narrow band to full wrap |
| Stock | Coated cardboard, paper, food-safe stock |
| Fit | Matched exactly to the base's outer dimensions |
| Outside as standard, inside on request | |
| Window | Die-cut, on board stock |
Fit is the number that matters most. Too loose and the sleeve slides off in handling; too tight and it scuffs the base going on. Send the base's exact outer measurements, including any lid lip, and we'll size the sleeve to them.
Why a Sleeve Carries a Seasonal Range Better Than a Full Box
Seasonal artwork is where fully printed boxes get expensive. Each new design needs its own run of the whole structure, and last season's leftover stock is printed with something you no longer sell. A sleeve moves that risk onto the cheapest part of the pack. The base is ordered plain in bulk and stays useful indefinitely; only the sleeve carries the season, the scent or the limited edition. Soap makers rotating scents use exactly this setup, as do tea brands and gift sellers. The trade-off is coverage. A sleeve leaves part of the base visible, so the base needs to look finished in its own right, and a plain kraft or white box usually does.
Designing Art for a Band That Wraps Around Edges
Sleeve artwork is printed flat and then folds around the base, so the edges of the base become creases in the print. Keep logos, text and fine detail off those lines, where heavy ink can crack and a foil stripe will split. The front face carries the brand, and the back is the natural place for ingredients or product details, since the base can stay blank.
Coated sleeves take full color, gloss or matte lamination, foil and spot UV. On a narrow band, keep the design to a name and one mark, because there is little room. Uncoated paper reads softer and suits one or two colors. Where artwork changes often, digital print avoids paying for plates on each new version.
Sleeves for Gift Sets, Launches and Limited Runs
Gift brands put holiday and corporate gift sets in a plain base and change the sleeve per occasion or per client, so one stock of boxes covers the whole year. Launch teams slide a sleeve over existing packaging to mark a new edition without changing the box underneath. Perfume brands use a sleeve over a plain rigid base. Coffee shops wrap cups in sleeves sized to each diameter, chocolatiers band bars over foil, and soap and hemp brands sleeve bars and jars to swap scents and strains. Across all of them the sleeve is doing one job: changing what a product says without changing what it ships in, which keeps the base order simple however often the message moves.
Picking Paper, Cardboard or Food Stock for Your Sleeve
Three questions settle the stock. Will the sleeve touch food directly? Then it needs food-safe stock and coating. Will it come off and go back on, or sit on a retail shelf being handled? Then coated cardboard, which holds its shape. Is it single-use at high volume? Then paper, which uses the least material.
Sleeves usually finish inside 8–12 business days of proof sign-off, often sooner, with rush at a stated extra cost. The minimum is 100 sleeves, shipping is included, and every run passes a three-stage check, with a reprint at our cost if bulk doesn't match the proof. Design help is unlimited and free, which matters here because sleeve artwork tends to change more often than box artwork.

What brands say about this box
They live there rather than here, where we can't edit them, delete them, or pick which ones you get to see. That is exactly what makes them worth reading.

What does a sleeve actually do?
It wraps a plain base, carrying your branding while the box underneath stays generic. That means you reprint the sleeve when artwork changes rather than the whole box, which is where the saving is.
Can sleeves be printed on the inside?
Yes, though it's rarely seen. On a wide sleeve the interior shows as it slides off, but on a narrow band it doesn't. The spend is usually better placed on the outside.
Are sleeves cheaper than full boxes?
Considerably, since they use less material and a simpler die. That's the main reason brands choose them, alongside the ability to change artwork without new box tooling.
How soon can packaging sleeves be made?
About 8–12 business days from proof approval, often at the faster end since sleeves are simple to produce. Rush is available at a stated extra cost.
What's the minimum order for packaging sleeves?
100 sleeves. Sleeves are among the cheapest formats we offer, which makes them practical for trialing artwork before committing to printed boxes.
