Compostable Food Boxes
Compostable food boxes carry a stronger claim than biodegradable ones, because compostable means meeting a defined standard with a set timeframe. Most compostable board is specified for commercial composting; home composting is a different, stricter standard, so tell us which one you need. The minimum stays at 100 boxes, so you can trial the stock before switching your range.

Compostable Food Boxes and the Claim You'll Print
Compostable food boxes are bought by businesses whose customers, venues or retail partners expect packaging to go into a compost stream rather than the trash. That expectation usually comes with wording attached: a line on the box, a note on the menu, a requirement in a supplier agreement.
So the order starts with that wording. What exactly will you say, and who are you saying it to? The answer shapes the board, the coating and the inks. Buyers include cafés, event caterers, campus and office food counters, salad and bowl chains, and meal-prep brands. Many are responding to a specific request from a venue or a client rather than making the switch on their own.
Board Specified for Commercial Composting
These boxes use unbleached board specified for commercial composting.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Board | Specified for commercial composting |
| Composting route | Commercial facilities, not a home heap |
| Food-contact face | Grease-resistant coating, food-safe |
| Inks | Food-safe |
| Tolerance | ±1/16" (1.5mm) |
| Size | Cut to your product's dimensions |
The route matters, since a garden heap never reaches the conditions a commercial facility runs at. Check the claim you plan to make against what the facilities your customers actually use will accept. If you need a home-compostable claim instead, say so before we quote, and tell us the size of each item you'll pack.
Why Tray Formats Suit Compostable Prepared Food
Compostable packaging fits naturally where food is eaten soon after purchase: lunches, salads, hot counters and catering. That's prepared food, and prepared food usually sits better in a tray than a tall carton. It's spread out, served open and eaten straight from the pack.
Open trays and tray and lid builds handle that well. Think about the whole pack, though. If the food goes out under a plastic lid or behind a film window, check whether those parts share the claim before you print it. Compostable board also costs more than standard stock. For dry goods that sit on a shelf for months and go home in a shopping bag, a recyclable kraft carton may do the same job for less.
Coatings and Inks That Don't Undercut the Claim
Every layer added to the board becomes part of what goes into the compost, so finishes stay simple: food-safe inks, light coverage and no plastic lamination. Skip metallic effects too.
Kraft-based board prints muted, and one or two dark inks hold best. A single bold logo on an otherwise plain tray often looks more confident than a fully printed one. Leave panel space for disposal instructions written in your own words; you name the claim, and the box carries it. If a retailer or venue has asked for specific wording, send it with your artwork, and our free design help will fit it beside the logo without crowding either.
Compostable Packaging for Cafés and Coffee Bars
Cafés with a food counter are the most natural buyers. Tea and coffee sellers who already talk about how their beans are grown often want food packaging that tells the same story, for pastries, toasties and grab-and-go salads.
Campus and office canteens order compostable trays where the building runs its own food-waste collection. Festival and event caterers use them where organizers set packaging rules for vendors. Salad and bowl chains put lunches in compostable trays at the counter. Meal-prep brands delivering to homes in areas with curbside food-waste pickup use them so customers have a clear way to dispose of a week's worth of boxes.
Ordering Compostable Food Boxes, Step by Step
First, tell us the claim you'll make and any wording a venue or retailer has asked for. Second, send the product dimensions, and we'll build the dieline and confirm the measurements in writing. Third, approve a proof on the actual stock.
From that approval, production takes 8–12 business days. If the board needs sourcing first, we'll say so before you approve, so the date you plan around is real. Need it sooner? Rush is priced separately and shown upfront. Orders start at 100 boxes, pricing covers the die, plates and setup, and shipping is in the price. Each run is checked three times, and bulk that misses the approved proof is reprinted at our cost.

Read all reviews on Trustpilot(opens in a new tab)Answers before you have to ask.
What's the difference between compostable and biodegradable?
Compostable meets a certified standard and breaks down into soil under controlled composting conditions within a set timeframe. Biodegradable simply means it breaks down eventually, with no standard attached. Compostable is the stronger and more regulated claim.
Are compostable boxes home or commercial compostable?
Most compostable board is specified for commercial composting, which reaches higher temperatures than a home heap. If you need a home-compostable claim specifically, tell us, because it's a different and stricter standard.
Do compostable boxes cost more?
Usually somewhat, since specialty stock costs more than standard board. The gap narrows at volume. For many brands the access it unlocks with retailers and marketplaces offsets the difference, which is worth weighing alongside the unit price.
How long do compostable boxes take?
Around 8–12 business days from proof approval. Sourcing specialty stock occasionally adds a little at the front end, and we'll tell you if so. Rush is available at a quoted premium.
What's the minimum on compostable boxes?
100 boxes, the same as our standard stocks. Compostable board costs more per unit, but the minimum doesn't change, so you can trial it before switching a whole range over.
