Foundation Boxes

One foundation box design should cover an entire shade range without new tooling for every SKU. We keep a single carton structure and change only the printed panel, with shade names and codes in the same position each time. The insert leaves clearance above the pump so it isn't accidentally pressed down in transit. Shipping is included in every quote, whatever the quantity.

Foundation Boxes for a Full Shade Range

Foundation is the most SKU-heavy product most makeup brands sell. A single formula can run to dozens of shades, each one a separate item to stock, pick, ship and identify, and the box carries a good share of that work. A foundation box here is a folding carton built for a glass or plastic bottle, usually with a pump or dropper, often holding a cut insert. Buyers include color cosmetics brands extending a complexion range, skin tint and BB cream lines, and makeup artists' own labels. Beyond protecting the bottle, these brands need packaging that helps a shopper find their shade among many near-identical boxes, and that lets a warehouse picker tell two neighboring shades apart without opening either.

Foundation Box Specs for Pump Bottles and Shade Panels

Glass foundation bottles are heavy for their size, so cartons sit in the middle to upper part of the range on bleached paperboard.

Spec Foundation box
Board SBS coated board, 18–24pt
Construction Reverse tuck, or auto-lock base for heavy glass
Insert Die-cut, with headroom above the pump
Shade panel Fixed position across every SKU
Internal size From the bottle with pump fitted
Tolerance About ±0.5–1mm

If the range comes in two bottle sizes, a full size and a travel size, each gets its own dieline, and the shade panel stays in the same place on both. Plastic bottles for skin tints are lighter and can drop toward the lower end of the caliper range without losing shape.

One Carton Structure, Many Shades: The Case for a Tuck Box

The straight-tuck folding box suits foundation for a reason that has little to do with the bottle: a shade range gets printed many times, in modest quantities, over several years. A folding carton keeps that affordable. The same die cuts every shade, the cartons ship and store flat, and a shade added next spring slots into the existing row on a shelf with no visible difference in size. Rigid boxes make every additional shade expensive to produce and bulky to hold in stock, which is why foundation rarely uses them. Reverse tuck is the common alternative when a brand wants the front panel completely uninterrupted, and it uses the same economics.

Shade Codes, Swatches and Foil on Foundation Cartons

Shade information is the part of a foundation carton that changes from SKU to SKU, so it's planned first. There are two common approaches: a printed color chip in the shade's tone, or a shade code in foil or a single ink with the color described in words. Printing every shade as its own Pantone spot is the most accurate option but adds cost across a long range, so most brands run the chip in CMYK and treat it as a guide. The rest of the carton stays fixed: logo, finish and layout. Soft-touch with a foil logo suits prestige lines. For a range that adds shades often, a white carton with clean typography is easier to keep consistent across print runs than a heavily finished one.

Foundation Boxes for Base Makeup Ranges and Gift Bundles

Complexion ranges order one structure across every shade, often in two bottle sizes. Skin tints and tinted moisturizers use lighter bottles, frequently plastic, and can step down in caliper. Makeup artist brands sell foundation in kits alongside concealer and primer, which moves the order to a multi-cavity tray. Retail launches need cartons that line up on a planogram, so carton height and face width are matched across the whole range. Private-label makers run one dieline for several client brands. Foundation also turns up in beauty gift bundles, usually as a full-size bottle with a brush or sponge, where a wider carton with an insert replaces the single box.

Ordering Foundation Boxes as the Range Grows

The first order sets the template for every shade that follows. We build the dieline from your bottle with the pump fitted, write the inside dimensions down for your sign-off, and send a proof showing exactly where each shade's name and code will print. Free design help, with no cap on revisions, helps when shade artwork covers many SKUs at once. Production takes 8–12 business days after approval, and rush is available at an added cost quoted upfront. Orders start at 100 boxes, shipping is included, and dies, plates and setup are in the quote. Every carton passes three checks during production, and a bulk run that doesn't match the approved proof gets reprinted on our account. A new shade later is new artwork on an existing dieline.

What brands say about this box

Answers before you have to ask.

Can one box design cover my whole shade range?

Usually yes, and it's the economical way to do it. Most brands keep one carton structure and change only the printed panel per shade, so you're not paying for new tooling each time. Shade names and codes sit in a consistent position.

Can foundation boxes carry a shade swatch?

Yes, and most ranges do. A printed swatch panel or a foiled shade code keeps the range consistent while letting each SKU identify itself. Bear in mind printed swatches are approximate — they won't match the product exactly.

Can foundation boxes hold a pump bottle securely?

Yes, with a cut insert. Pump bottles are top-heavy and the pump itself can depress if the box presses on it, so the cavity is cut with clearance above the pump as well as around the bottle.

How quickly can foundation boxes be made?

Typically 8–12 business days once the proof is approved, however many shades you're running. Rush is available at a premium quoted upfront, and shipping is included on every order.

Can foundation boxes be ordered per shade?

Yes, from 100 boxes per shade. Most brands keep one carton structure across the range and change only the printed panel, which keeps costs down as you add shades over time.
