Cardboard Pillow Boxes
Cardboard pillow boxes put the curved build on coated board when color accuracy matters, as it often does in the event and favor market. Strength is no different from kraft; what matters for a pillow box is stiffness, since the curve depends on tension. Lamination protects print at the curved ends, where handling concentrates. Reorders need no new proof once artwork is on file.

The Pillow Box Version Built for Printed Color
Cardboard on this page means coated white paperboard, a smooth bright sheet coated on the print side, not the fluted board used in shipping cartons. On a pillow box that matters because the board becomes the canvas. This is the version to choose when the artwork, rather than the board, carries the brand: full-color logos, photography, gradients and patterns all print close to the file. Buyers here usually have a defined identity already, with set colors, a logo used everywhere and perhaps a pattern that runs across their labels and website. A box that renders all of that accurately ties a small favor or sample to the rest of the brand. If your design is a single mark in one ink, this is more board than you need.
Coated Pillow Board, Laminate and Print Specs
Coated pillow boxes are cut from white-faced coated board for full-color curves, with stiffness specified so the curved ends hold once folded.
| Spec | What you get |
|---|---|
| Stock | Coated white paperboard with a bright print face |
| Full color, with Pantone references matched at proof | |
| Laminate | Optional film over the printed surface |
| Size | Cut to your product's footprint and depth |
The white face is what makes the difference. Ink stays on the surface instead of sinking into fiber, so light tints, small type and photographic detail hold up in a way they don't on unbleached stock.
Coated or Kraft: What the Extra Cost Buys
What you pay for on coated board is the print surface and very little else; the box closes and holds its shape the same way a kraft one does. On kraft, ink sinks into brown fiber and comes out darker and muted. On coated board it stays on top of a white face, so a brand red stays red and a pale pastel actually shows. For brightly branded sweet ranges, beauty samples and anything sold beside other packaging in the same colors, that accuracy is the reason to buy. Where it isn't worth paying for: a one-color stamp, a natural or handmade positioning, or a box that will be wrapped in ribbon and tissue anyway. In those cases kraft does the same job for less.
Full Color, Lamination and Proofing After the Film
Coated board takes full-color artwork, including photos, gradients and fine type that rougher stocks would soften. On a pillow box the limit is geometry rather than ink: keep key detail in the center band of each face, since artwork near the curved ends stretches as the board bends, and keep heavy coverage off the end scores, where a crease breaks the ink film. Lamination is optional and worth considering for boxes that get handled a lot. If you add it, color is proofed with the film applied, because film changes how printed color reads and a proof taken before it would mislead you. Pantone matching works best when you send the exact reference rather than a color picked from a screen.
Coated Pillows for Sweets, Samples and Beauty Minis
Coated pillow boxes go mostly to brands with set colors to match. Beauty and skincare companies use them for mini skincare samples and promo beauty kits, where a sample has to look like it belongs to the full-size range. Confectioners and chocolatiers use them for small branded assortments at checkout or as favors. Event planners choose them when the theme color is pastel or bright and has to print accurately, since kraft would dull it. Online stores add them as gift-with-purchase packaging, so a free item arrives looking like part of the order. Corporate teams use them for branded giveaways at launches and trade shows, where the logo has to match the banner behind the table.
Second Runs From Files Already on Record
The first order is where the work happens. We build the dieline from your product's measurements and go through as many free design revisions as the artwork needs before you approve the proof. After that, repeat orders are simpler, since the approved files and dieline stay on record and only change when you change them. Each run takes 8–12 business days from approval, with rush available at an extra cost quoted upfront. Pricing includes dies, plates, setup and shipping, so the second invoice reads like the first. The minimum is 100 boxes, and on orders above 10,000, samples are free. Every run goes through the same three-stage check.

What brands say about this box

When is coated board worth it on a pillow box?
When bright, accurate color matters — which for the event and favor market it often does. For natural and artisan positioning, kraft costs less and suits the product better.
Can cardboard pillow boxes be laminated?
Yes, and it protects the print at the curved ends where handling concentrates. Bear in mind lamination shifts printed color slightly, so we proof after the film.
Is cardboard stronger than kraft here?
Not inherently — both come in similar weights. Cardboard's advantage is print quality. For a pillow box the more important factor is board stiffness, since the curve needs tension to hold.
What's the lead time on cardboard pillow boxes?
Around 8–12 business days once you approve the proof, including lamination if specified. Rush is available at an added cost quoted first.
Can cardboard pillow boxes be reordered quickly?
Yes. With your dimensions and artwork on file, reorders need no new proof unless something changes, and most run in about 8–12 business days.
