Gable Food Boxes

The handle on gable food boxes is cut from the same sheet as the carton, making it only as strong as the board beneath. We match the stock to your filled weight, so a loaded meal box or party pack carries without tearing. A film-backed window fits neatly below the handle, and production starts at 100 boxes, which suits occasional catering orders and seasonal celebrations.

A Meal Box That Travels by Hand

A gable box is the box you hand straight to a customer: a carton with a sloped top that rises into a handle. It needs no bag, and it arrives the right way up.

Buyers are caterers handing out boxed lunches, bakeries putting together party packs, restaurants with family meal deals and event organizers feeding a crowd at once. The box is often the whole presentation. There's no outer bag and no tray underneath, and the customer walks away holding it. Gables also line up neatly in a delivery crate with the handles facing up, so a driver can lift several at once and pass each one over without anyone touching the food or tipping the contents.

Gable Food Box Specs Matched to Filled Weight

Gables are made in kraft paperboard or coated white board, food-grade on the inside.

Spec Detail
Board Kraft or coated white, food-grade
Caliper 16–24pt for light loads, heavier as weight rises
Handle Cut from the carton sheet
Window Optional film-backed cut-out
Inside face Grease-resistant coating for oily food
Tolerance ±1/16" (1.5mm)

Quote from your heaviest pack, not your average one, since that's the load the handle has to carry on its worst day. Include any drink or sauce cups packed alongside the food. Send the product dimensions too, and we'll build the dieline and confirm the measurements in writing.

Why the Handle Decides the Board

In most boxes the base takes the load. In a gable, the load hangs from the top. Everything inside pulls down on the handle, and the handle opening is where a gable fails first.

That means the board is chosen for the carry, not for the print, and it's the one place we'd advise against saving money. The handle-top gable style also limits what fits well. Tall items sit awkwardly under the slope, and wide, flat food such as pizza slices or sheet cake is better in a tray or clamshell. For light loads like cookies, or a sandwich and a drink, a thinner board carries the weight comfortably and costs less.

Windows and Print Around a Gable Handle

The front and back panels below the slope are the main print area, and they're what people see when the box is carried. The sloped roof panels show from above, so they're a good spot for a logo when boxes are lined up on a counter or in a crate.

A window in the front panel lets a party pack show what's inside, which helps on a counter display. Since one gable structure often carries several event designs a year, our free design help adapts each new artwork to the same dieline. Keep fine detail away from the handle area, since it folds and takes wear. On coated white board, full color suits seasonal and event artwork; on kraft, one or two dark inks work best.

Party Packs, Meal Boxes and Catering Drops

Caterers use gables for boxed lunches at conferences, offices and training days, where each person picks up a box and finds a seat. Restaurants offering grab-and-go meal service use them for family deals and combo meals that need to travel without a bag.

Bakeries fill them with cookies, cupcakes or pastries as party packs, often with a window. Schools, sports clubs and community events order them for picnic lunches and match days. Holiday and seasonal treat boxes are another common use, with artwork changed for each occasion. Kids' meal brands like the shape because a child can carry it, and the box itself feels like part of the treat.

Ordering Gable Boxes Around a Date

Many gable orders are tied to a date: a conference, a holiday, a school event. Tell us the date when you ask for a quote, and we'll confirm whether standard production gets the boxes there in time.

Standard production is 8–12 business days after proof approval, handle included. A closer date can be met with rush, at an added cost we state before you order. Every order is checked at three stages, and a run that misses its proof is reprinted at our cost. Pricing covers the die, plates and setup, shipping is included, and the 100-box minimum means a one-off event doesn't leave you with a storeroom of spares.

What brands say about this box

Answers before you have to ask.

Will the handle hold a full meal box?

It will if the board and the handle are matched to the weight. The handle is cut from the same sheet, so it's only as strong as the stock. Tell us the filled weight and we'll spec board that holds without the handle tearing.

Can gable boxes have a window?

Yes. A film-backed cut-out works well on a gable, since the handle sits above and leaves the front panel free. It's a common choice for party packs and retail meal boxes where showing the contents helps.

How much weight can a gable handle carry?

That depends on the board and how the handle is cut. The handle is part of the same sheet, so it's only as strong as the stock beneath it. Tell us the filled weight and we'll spec board that won't tear at the handle.

How long do gable food boxes take?

About 8–12 business days from proof approval, handle included. Rush production is available at a premium quoted before you commit, with shipping included in the price.

Can I order gable boxes in small batches?

Yes, from 100 boxes. Gable boxes are often bought for events and seasonal service rather than continuous use, so the low minimum suits one-off runs as well as ongoing supply.
