Window Cake Boxes
Window cake boxes put the window in the lid, because cakes are looked at from above in a display case; front windows suit eye-level shelving instead, so tell us your setup. The film and grease-resistant coating are specified separately, so neither compromises the other. Windows sit away from structural corners to carry the weight. A 100-box run shows whether your cake fogs the film.

Selling a Decorated Cake Without Opening the Lid
Every time a cake comes out of its box so a customer can see it, someone's hands get close to the piping. Window cake boxes remove that step. The decoration shows through a film-backed cut-out, so the cake stays boxed from the moment it's finished until it leaves with the buyer. That changes how a counter runs: staff can pre-box the day's cakes, fill the display and sell from sight rather than from memory of what's inside each box. Buyers are bakeries, cake shops and grocery bakery sections whose cakes sell on decoration, and who lose sales when a closed white box sits next to an open one. The window does the selling; the rest of the box has to keep the cake as clean as when it went in.
Window Cake Box Specs: Cut, Film and Board Face
Most window cake boxes run on printable board that frames the cut-out, with the film fixed behind the opening.
| Attribute | Window cake box |
|---|---|
| Board | Coated folding stock, around 20–24pt, food-safe |
| Inside face | Grease-resistant coating, specified separately from the window |
| Window | Die-cut opening with film behind it |
| Placement | Lid for display cases, front panel for eye-level shelving |
| Corners | Window kept clear of the load-bearing corners |
| Tolerance | ±1/16" (1.5mm) |
The base has no cut in it, because the base carries the cake. Film is chosen with your cake's storage temperature in mind, since the wrong film fogs over a cold cake.
Why Window Boxes Usually Run on an Auto-Bottom
A window takes board out of the lid or front panel, so the strength has to come from somewhere else, and on a cake box that means the base. Window cake boxes are commonly made with a glued lock bottom that keeps the base solid: pre-glued at the folds, it opens into a flat, locked floor in one motion and carries the cake without the panel above it doing any structural work. A tuck base would ask the windowed panels to help hold the shape, which is the job they're worst at. The auto-bottom also helps on a busy morning, because staff boxing a run of decorated cakes need a box that sets up square without fiddling near a finished top. We'll quote another base if yours suits it.
Printing Around the Cut-Out on a Cake Lid
Once a window is in the lid, the printed area becomes a frame, and the design should treat it that way. Keep the logo to one side of the opening rather than tight against its edge, where a die cut a fraction off can clip artwork. Coated board holds full color sharply, so a bakery that wants its brand colors around the window can have them, though one or two colors is often enough when the cake is the picture. Busy patterns right up to the cut-out compete with the decoration. Gloss lamination over the whole lid is rarely worth it here: the film already does the visual work, and laminated board traps condensation on a cold cake. Put the effort into where the window sits.
Window Cake Boxes for Display Cases and Chiller Shelves
The format earns its place wherever cakes are chosen by looking. Bakery display counters use lid windows because customers look down into a case, so pre-boxed cakes can sit in rows and still be picked by decoration. Grocery bakery sections stock windowed boxes on chiller shelves, where a front window at eye level shows the side of the cake and its layers. Cake shops selling ready-made birthday cakes use them so a passing customer can buy without waiting for a box to be filled. Seasonal ranges benefit too: a holiday cake with a themed top sells through a window in a way a printed photo on a closed box never matches. Anywhere the decoration is the reason to buy, the window carries the sale.
Placing the Window on the Proof Before the Run
The window's position is the one decision worth checking twice, so it's settled on the proof before anything is cut. Tell us how your cakes are displayed and how tall the decoration stands, and the dieline will show exactly where the opening falls and what it frames. Design help is free, and revisions are unlimited until the window sits where you want it. A first run can be as small as 100 boxes. Production takes 8–12 business days from approval, and rush is available at a cost we quote upfront. Should the bulk run differ from that approved proof, the reprint is on us; every box also passes three separate checks before dispatch. Dies, plates, setup and shipping all sit inside the quoted price.

What brands say about this box
They live there rather than here, where we can't edit them, delete them, or pick which ones you get to see. That is exactly what makes them worth reading.

Where should the window sit on a cake box?
Usually the lid, since cakes are looked down on in a display case. A front window works where boxes sit on shelving at eye level. Tell us how yours are merchandised and we'll position it accordingly.
Can window cake boxes be grease-resistant?
Yes. The window is a cut in the board with film behind it, and the grease-resistant coating sits on the board itself. The two are specified separately and don't compromise each other.
Does a window weaken a cake box?
Slightly, and on cake boxes it matters more than most because of the weight above. We position windows away from structural corners and keep the base solid, since that's what carries the load.
What's the turnaround on window cake boxes?
About 8–12 business days from proof approval, window included. Cutting and filming doesn't extend the timeline. Rush is available at a stated extra cost.
Can I test window boxes before scaling?
Yes. At 100 boxes you can check how the window frames your decoration and whether it fogs with your product temperature, then scale with real information.
