Small Cake Boxes
Small cake boxes fit six-inch rounds and single servings, and height usually limits them more than width, so send us the cake dimensions including the tallest decoration. A small window lets a gifted cake's decoration sell itself. Small formats are the cheapest per unit to trial, which makes them a sensible place to test a new design before applying it across your full range.

Small Cake Boxes Cut So a Six-Inch Round Can't Slide
Small cakes rarely get crushed. They get shaken. A six-inch round dropped into a box built for an eight-inch cake has a ring of empty space around it, and every corner taken on the drive home throws it against a wall. The fix is a box cut to the cake, not to the nearest stock size. Small cake boxes are for six-inch rounds, minis and single servings, bought by bakeries and home bakers who sell small formats alongside their full-size cakes. These buyers often sell the small cake as a gift or an add-on, so it has to arrive looking as finished as the larger version. Getting the footprint tight is the whole brief here; everything else on the box is secondary to that.
Six-Inch and Single-Serve Box Specs in Kraft
Six-inch boxes are mostly built from kraft board sized for minis, with a grease-resistant inside face; coated board is available where full-color print matters.
| Attribute | Small cake box |
|---|---|
| Board | Food-grade kraft, around 20–24pt |
| Inside face | Grease-resistant |
| Footprint | Six-inch rounds and single servings, cut close |
| Height | Set by the tallest decoration, not the sponge |
| Tolerance | ±1/16" (1.5mm) |
| Window | Optional |
At this size, a sixteenth of an inch is a bigger share of the gap around the cake, which is why the dieline is built from your measurements and confirmed as internal before cutting.
Why a Folding Carton Is Enough for a Small Cake
A small cake doesn't need the structure a wide or tiered one does, and paying for it adds cost with no benefit. Small cake boxes are commonly made as a tuck-closing carton for light cakes, folded from a single printed blank that ships flat and holds a six-inch round or a single serving without strain. The base doesn't span enough board to bow, so a locking bottom is optional rather than necessary. That keeps the unit price low and assembly quick at the counter. Where small boxes do need care is the fit, not the strength, which is why the effort goes into the dieline. If a small box will carry something denser, such as a heavy fruit cake, we can add a locking base to the same carton.
Small Panels, Small Windows and One Clear Logo
A six-inch lid gives you far less space than most brand artwork was designed for, so the print brief needs trimming. One logo, sized to read from arm's length, does more than a full layout shrunk until nothing is legible. On kraft, keep to one or two strong colors; fine detail and pale tones can print muddy on brown board. A small window in the lid suits this format well, especially when the cake is a gift, because the decoration does the presenting. Keep the window modest so enough board stays around it to hold the lid stiff. Lamination is rarely worth it on a box this size. If your full-size boxes are already printed, matching their artwork scaled down keeps the whole range consistent.
Small Cake Boxes for Minis, Gifts and Tasting Samples
The format covers more uses than its size suggests. Bakeries sell six-inch rounds to couples and small households who don't want a full cake. Gift cakes from a bakery counter are often small ones, bought to take to a host or hand to a colleague. Single servings go into individual boxes for cafés and dessert counters. Wedding cake makers use small boxes for tasting samples, sending couples home with several flavors in matching packaging. Corporate orders use mini cakes as client gifts, with the box carrying the company's branding. Home bakers starting out often begin with small sizes, because ingredients cost less and the cakes are easier to sell. In each case the cake is small, but the expectation of how it arrives isn't.
Starting a Range From the Smallest Size
Plenty of bakeries begin their packaging with the small box and add larger sizes once the design has been seen on a real counter. The minimum is 100 boxes, and the smaller footprint keeps that first order modest. Measure the cake with its decoration in place; from those figures we draw the dieline, send a proof and revise it as often as you need at no charge. Production takes 8–12 business days once the proof is approved. Rush is available at extra cost and quoted upfront. Three checks on every box matter on a fit this tight, and if bulk still misses the approved proof, the replacement run is on us. Freight is part of every quote.

What brands say about this box
They live there rather than here, where we can't edit them, delete them, or pick which ones you get to see. That is exactly what makes them worth reading.

How small can a cake box practically go?
Small enough for a six-inch round or a single serving, though the height usually limits it more than the width. Send us the cake dimensions including any decoration height and we'll build to them.
Can small cake boxes have a window?
Yes, and it works particularly well at this size. A small window on a single-serving box lets the decoration sell itself, which matters most when the cake is bought as a gift.
Are small boxes proportionally cheaper?
Somewhat, though not proportionally. A lot of cost sits in setup and tooling rather than board, so a box half the size isn't half the price. The saving is real but smaller than expected.
How long do small cake boxes take?
About 8–12 business days once the proof is approved, often at the faster end given the size. Rush is available at an extra cost we'll quote before you commit.
What's the minimum on small cake boxes?
100 boxes. Small formats are the cheapest per unit to trial, which makes them a sensible place to test a new design before applying it across your range.
