Cardboard Cake Boxes
Cardboard cake boxes earn their cost when you need bright, accurate brand color or lamination for moisture resistance, since coated board holds ink on the surface. Strength comes from caliper and structure, not the liner. Avoid heavy gloss laminating films on fresh or cold cakes, which trap condensation. For one or two colors, kraft costs less and performs identically.

Cake Boxes Where the Brand Color Has to Match
Customers photograph cakes, and the box is usually in the frame. For a bakery whose brand is a specific pink, teal or deep green, that photo only helps if the color on the box is the color on the shopfront and the website. Cardboard cake boxes exist for that buyer. The coated face takes ink on the surface rather than letting it sink into fiber, so full-color artwork prints the way it was drawn and repeats the same way run after run. Bakeries with a designed identity, cafés with a strong palette and cake brands selling wholesale all buy them for consistency first. Board strength isn't the reason to pick this page over kraft; the print is, and everything else here follows from that.
Coated White Board Specs for Full-Color Cake Boxes
These boxes are printed on clay-coated white stock at 20–24pt, with food-safe inks outside and a grease-resistant inside face.
| Attribute | Cardboard cake box |
|---|---|
| Board | Clay-coated white folding stock, 20–24pt |
| Print surface | Coated face, full color |
| Inks | Food-safe |
| Inside face | Grease-resistant |
| Lamination | Optional, for finish and moisture resistance |
| Tolerance | ±1/16" (1.5mm) |
Sizes are cut to your cakes from dimensions you send us, confirmed in writing as internal or external. Where a heavier cake needs more support, the caliper goes up or the base construction changes; the coated face stays the same.
Coated Board or Kraft: Paying for Print, Not Strength
Choosing coated board is a print decision, and it should be made as one. A box printed in a single brand color on a plain ground gains little from a coated face, and the money is better spent on size or base construction. The case for coated starts when the artwork carries photography, gradients, fine type or a shade that has to sit beside your signage without looking off. Load is a separate question, answered by caliper and build. Structurally, a pre-glued bottom that sets up square is the common build here, and that base, not the outer liner, is what keeps a cake level when the box is carried. Unsure? Ask for a kraft quote alongside; the gap shows what the color costs.
Lamination, Full Color and the Condensation Catch
Full-color print across every panel is the main reason to be on this board, and lamination is available on top of it. A laminated face resists moisture and changes how the box feels in the hand, and on a cake stored dry at room temperature it's a sensible finish. The catch is temperature. A heavy gloss film on a box holding a refrigerated or just-finished cake keeps condensation pressed against the board, softening it from the inside. For those cakes, choose a lighter film or leave the coated face bare; the print holds up well without it. Windows can be added to the lid or front panel. Extra finishing a customer sees for one car ride isn't worth paying for. Keep the spend on color.
Branded Cake Boxes for Cafés, Bakeries and Cookie Counters
The buyers here are businesses whose packaging is part of the brand rather than a container behind the counter. Cafés selling whole cakes beside coffee use full-color boxes that match their cups and bags. Bakeries with a designed identity put the same artwork on every cake size so the range reads as one line. Many shops run cookie and cake counters sharing one brand, and coated board lets both product lines carry identical color even though the boxes differ in shape. Cake brands supplying cafés and delis wholesale use printed boxes so their name travels to someone else's counter. Corporate and event orders, where a cake is boxed in a client's colors, are another regular use, since exact color is the whole brief there.
Locking Your Color Spec for Every Reorder
Color accuracy matters most on the second order, when the box has to match the first. After approval we keep your dieline, artwork and color references on file, so a reorder doesn't start from scratch. Design help is free and unlimited before the first proof, which is the right time to settle brand colors against a printed reference. Orders start at 100 boxes. Production runs 8–12 business days from proof approval, lamination included, with rush available at extra cost quoted upfront. A three-stage check covers every box, so faults are caught before dispatch rather than at your counter, and a run that drifts from the signed-off proof is reprinted without charge. Shipping, dies, plates and setup are in the price from the start.

What brands say about this box

When is coated board worth it for cake boxes?
When you need bright, accurate brand color or want lamination for moisture resistance. For everyday boxes printed in one or two colors, kraft costs less and performs the same against grease.
Can cardboard cake boxes be laminated?
Yes, and lamination adds moisture resistance as well as finish. Avoid heavy gloss films on boxes holding fresh or cold cakes though, since trapped condensation softens the board.
Is cardboard stronger than kraft for cake?
Not inherently. Both come in similar weights and either can be specified heavier. Cardboard's advantage is print quality. Load strength comes from caliper and structure, not the liner.
How soon can cardboard cake boxes be made?
Usually 8–12 business days once you approve the proof, including lamination if specified. Rush production is available at a quoted premium, shipping included.
Can cardboard cake boxes be reordered quickly?
Yes. With your dimensions and artwork on file, reorders need no new proof unless something changes, and most run in about 8–12 business days with rush available.
