Window Bakery Boxes

Window bakery boxes let the bake do the selling, since customers trust what they can see more than any printed description or photograph. The film-backed cut-out and the grease-resistant coating are specified separately, so you get both. One caution: warm product fogs the film, so let bakes cool first or choose a vented box instead. The minimum is 100 boxes, window included.

Window Bakery Boxes for Pre-Boxed Shelves Where Nobody Opens the Lid

Window bakery boxes suit the part of a bakery where product is packed before anyone asks for it: the grab shelf by the till, the chiller of boxed slices, the weekend stack of pre-filled assortments. There's no server describing what's inside and no glass case to look into, so the box has to answer the buyer's first question on its own. A clear panel does that without anyone lifting a lid, which also keeps hands off the product until it's paid for. The usual buyers are bakeries moving toward pre-packed sales, cafés reselling a local baker's goods, and farm shops stocking several makers side by side, where a closed, unlabeled box gets passed over for one that shows what it holds.

Window Bakery Box Specs: Film, Cut-Out and Board

Most window bakery boxes run on food-grade coated carton board, with the opening die-cut and a clear film fixed behind it.

Spec Detail
Board Food-grade folding stock, 18–24pt
Window Die-cut opening, clear film behind
Inside face Grease-resistant coating
Heavier orders E- or B-flute corrugated
Size Cut to your product's dimensions
Tolerance Around ±1/16" (1.5mm)

We build the dieline from your product measurements and confirm in writing whether they're internal or external. That matters more here than on a plain box: a window placed from the wrong figure ends up framing the box wall instead of the bake.

Why the Window Sits Best on a Self-Locking Base

A printed photograph of a pastry is a promise. A window is the pastry. That's the whole case for this variant over a fully printed box, and it works best when what sits behind the film looks the same every time: a neat row of tarts, a slice cut clean, cookies laid flat. These boxes are commonly made on a self-locking auto-bottom base, which opens flat and level so the product sits square under the opening rather than drifting into a corner. A base that sags pulls the bake out of frame. The honest limit: where the product is crumbly, uneven or likely to shift on the way home, a window shows the damage as clearly as it shows the bake, and a printed box may serve you better.

What to Print Around a Window and What to Leave Bare

The window takes the best space on the panel, so print has to work around it rather than across it. Put the logo and product name on the uncut panels or on the band above the opening, and keep fine text well clear of the cut edge, where a small shift in die position can clip a letter. Food-safe inks go on every surface. A matte or gloss film suits the outer face, though heavy gloss adds to condensation on anything packed warm. Foil reads well on the frame around the opening and costs little at this size. Two things to skip: imagery placed in the window area, which disappears once the cut is made, and busy background patterns that compete with the bake through the film.

Window Boxes for Cake Counters and Grab Shelves

Windowed boxes earn the most where the buyer chooses without help. Cake shops use them for slices and small whole cakes on celebration cake counters, where someone comparing two flavors wants to see the layers rather than read a label. Cafés reselling a local bakery's goods use them so the product sells itself beside the coffee machine. Delis and farm shops use them for mixed assortments of brownies, blondies and tray bakes. Market traders who pack the night before use them so a stall can be stocked quickly and still show what's on offer. Office breakfast orders are another regular use: a stack of identical windowed boxes lets the person collecting check every order without opening a single one.

Fixing the Window Position Before the Run Starts

The proof is where a window order is won or lost. It shows the cut in place against your artwork, and that's the moment to check it lines up with how the product actually sits, not how the drawing suggests it sits. If you can, print the dieline at full size and lay a real item on it. Once you approve, production runs 8–12 business days, with rush available at extra cost that we quote before you commit. Every box passes a three-stage check, and if the bulk run doesn't match the proof you approved, we reprint at our cost. Shipping is included in the price, so the figure you sign off is the figure you pay.

What brands say about this box

Answers before you have to ask.

Will the window fog up with warm product?

It can if the product is still warm when boxed, since condensation forms on the film. Venting helps, and letting product cool before packing helps more. For items that go in warm, we'd suggest a vented box over a window.

Can window boxes still be grease-resistant?

Yes. The window is a cut in the board with film behind it, and the grease-resistant coating sits on the board itself. The two are specified separately, so you can have both without compromise.

Does a window weaken the box?

Slightly, since you're removing board from a panel. On most bakery boxes it makes no practical difference because the loads are light. On larger boxes we compensate by positioning the window away from the structural corners.

How long do window bakery boxes take?

Most orders are ready in about 8–12 business days once you approve the proof, window included. Rush is available at an extra cost, quoted upfront, with shipping included.

What's the minimum order for window bakery boxes?

100 boxes, window included. That's low enough to trial the format alongside your existing boxes before switching a range over. Design help is unlimited and free at any quantity.
