Cardboard Lid & Tray Boxes

Cardboard lid tray boxes put the two-piece build on coated board, the right choice when brand color must be accurate or you want gloss, matte or soft-touch lamination, proofed after the film. They suit light to moderate products; heavier contents make the base flex as it lifts, which is what rigid removes. Reorders need no new proof once dimensions and artwork are on file.

Printed Two-Piece Boxes Where Brand Color Can't Drift

If a brand is recognized by its color, the lid is where that color has to be right. A cardboard lid tray box is the two-piece build on coated white board, chosen when the artwork carries a signature shade, a photograph or an all-over pattern that kraft would dull. It ships flat, assembles at your end and costs less than a rigid box. The buyers are usually retail and gift brands with a defined look, selling products light enough for folding board that need to look the same on every reorder. Think of it as the default two-piece box for brands that care more about print than about weight in the hand, and that change artwork often enough to want a cheaper build.

Both pieces are cut from coated board on both lid and base, so ink sits on a smooth white face and colors hold close to the proof. Printing inside is available, which lets the base walls and lid underside carry a pattern or message seen only on opening. The limit is filled weight: tell us what the box will hold and we'll say whether coated board is enough or rigid is the safer build. Your dimensions become the dieline, with a written note on whether each figure is internal or external.

Why Coated White Board Suits a Lid That Gets Looked At

The lid is the largest flat surface on the box and the first one handled, so whatever the board does to color shows there most. Kraft absorbs ink and pulls everything toward brown. Rigid holds color well but costs more and takes longer, and that spend only pays off when the box is kept. Coated white board sits between them: it prints accurately, takes lamination, and keeps the lower cost and shorter schedule of a folding build. That suits fashion labels matching a house color across shirt boxes, accessory sets and seasonal gift packs, where a wrong shade gets noticed. The trade-off is feel. A coated folding lid is light, and if customers need to feel the price in their hands, coated board won't give them that and rigid will.

Gloss, Matte or Soft-Touch Film on Lid and Base

Coated board is the stock in this family that takes film best, so lamination is where most finishing decisions land. Gloss makes colors brighter and suits photographic artwork. Matte reads quieter and keeps glare off a lid that gets photographed. Soft-touch adds a velvety surface customers notice as they lift the lid, but it shows handling marks, so an anti-scuff film is worth adding on boxes handled often. Any film shifts printed color slightly, so choose the film before final color sign-off. On top of the laminate, foil or spot UV on the logo adds contrast without covering the lid. Keep finishes to the lid and outer walls; the inside of the base rarely needs film.

Who Prints Full Color on a Lift-Off Lid

Bakeries and confectioners are steady buyers, using printed lids for chocolate assortments, holiday gift boxes and cookie assortments sold as gifts, with a tray or divider holding pieces apart. Apparel brands use deeper versions for shirts and folded accessories. Toy and game sellers use them for puzzles, where the lid artwork is what sells the product on a shelf. Candle makers choose them for two-piece gift sets in seasonal colors. Wine sellers use them as a printed gift box around a single bottle. The common thread is a product light enough for folding board, sold where the lid's artwork does the selling, and a brand that changes designs often enough that rigid would be an expensive way to do it.

From Artwork File to a Laminated Run

Send the product dimensions and your artwork, and we'll build the dieline, confirm internal versus external in writing, and return a proof showing the lid, the base and any inside print. Design help is free and unlimited, so color adjustments and layout changes cost nothing before approval. Production then takes about 8–12 business days, with film applied inside that window; rush is available at an extra cost quoted before you commit. The minimum is 100 boxes, free samples come with orders above 10,000, and shipping is included. Dies, plates and setup are in the quote, so the price you approve is the price you pay. Every box passes a three-stage check, and if the run misses the approved proof, we reprint at our cost.

What brands say about this box

Answers before you have to ask.

When is coated board the right choice here?

When brand color has to be accurate, or when you want lamination. For one or two-color work on a natural-positioned brand, kraft costs less and suits the product better.

Can cardboard lid and tray boxes be laminated?

Yes, and coated board takes film better than kraft. Gloss, matte and soft-touch are all available. Bear in mind lamination shifts printed color, so we proof after the film goes on.

Is cardboard strong enough for a lid and tray?

For light to moderate product, yes. Where it struggles is heavier contents, where the base flexes as it's lifted. That flex is exactly what rigid removes.

How soon can cardboard lid and tray boxes be made?

About 8–12 business days from proof approval, including lamination if specified. Rush is available at an extra cost we'll quote first, shipping included.

Can cardboard lid and tray boxes be reordered quickly?

Yes. With your dimensions and artwork on file, reorders need no new proof unless something changes, and most run in about 8–12 business days with rush available.
