Brown Paper Bags
Brown paper bags carry a warm, earthy retail tone, and brown isn't always kraft: it can be natural unbleached paper, or a color printed or dyed onto bleached paper. Natural kraft costs least; printed brown costs more than white because of the full ink coverage. Rope handles pair especially well for gift retail, carrying more weight and encouraging customers to reuse them.

Brown Paper Bags Specified by Shade, Not by Stock
Brown paper bags start from a color decision. Plenty of buyers arrive knowing the shade they want, whether that's a café's walnut, a bakery's toasted crust or a deli's paper-parcel look, before they've thought about paper at all. That's the right order here. Brown can be produced more than one way, and the route matters less than whether the color on the bag matches the one on your shopfront. Buyers are usually food counters, gift shops and independent retailers whose interiors already lean warm. If the shade you need is a specific brand brown rather than simply brown, say so early, because it changes which paper the color goes on.
Two Routes to Brown: Natural Paper or Printed Color
| Route | Base paper | Color |
|---|---|---|
| Natural | Unbleached kraft | The paper's own brown |
| Applied | Bleached paper | Brown printed or dyed to a shade |
Both routes take the same handles, twisted paper, flat paper, rope, ribbon or die-cut, and both are sized to the purchase. The natural route uses paper that comes out brown without dye, so the shade is whatever the pulp gives and can't be tuned. The applied route lets the brown be specified, which is the one to choose when it has to line up with signage, boxes or a printed menu. Print on either goes on one face or both.
When Brown Reads Better Than White at the Counter
Brown is the color people already expect around food that's been made by hand. Paper parcels, flour sacks and butcher's wrap built that association long before branded bags, so a brown bag tells the customer something about the product before they look inside. White does a different job. It reads clean and clinical, which suits pharmacies and beauty but can make an independent bakery look like a chain. That's why bread shops wrapping loaves to go so often land on brown, and the same logic runs through delis, cheese shops and chocolate makers. Where brown works against you is bright, multicolored branding, which flattens on a brown ground, so test a busy logo before committing.
Printing a Logo Onto a Brown Ground
A brown bag gives the logo a mid-tone background, which narrows the ink choices. Black and deep brown give the strongest read and suit the paper-parcel look most brown-bag buyers want. Bright colors lose some punch against brown and are worth testing on a proof before you commit. Where the brown is applied to bleached paper, the logo can also be a knockout: left as bare white paper inside the brown, it reads cleanly without adding another ink. A single-color mark is usually the strongest choice on any brown. Whatever you print, keep solid areas clear of the base and side folds, where the bag bends each time it opens and ink wears first.
Brown Bags for Takeout Counters and Market Stalls
Brown bags are a workhorse wherever food leaves by hand. Sandwich shops and takeout counters use them for wrapped orders and boxed meals, often in a plain or one-color version. Bakeries use them for bread and pastries. Farmers' markets and greengrocers use them for loose produce, and gift shops for wrapped purchases. Hardware stores and pharmacies pick them for small items because the color looks neutral beside anything. Food that's hot, wet or greasy needs its own wrapper or box inside, because a paper bag won't hold back grease on its own. Treat the bag as the carrier and the wrap as the container, and both do their jobs.
Approving a Brown Shade Before the Run
On a brown bag, the shade is the thing to settle at proof. If you're matching an existing brown, such as a shopfront, a box or a printed menu, tell us at the start and send a reference so we know the target. Design help is free, and revisions are unlimited before anything prints. Once approved, the run goes through a three-stage check, and a batch that strays from the approved proof is reprinted at our expense. Orders above 10,000 bags include free samples first, which is the sensible route for a large run where shade matters. Production is 8–12 business days from approval, shipping is included, and rush is available at a quoted extra cost.

Is brown the same as kraft on a paper bag?
Not necessarily. Kraft is the paper itself — unbleached pulp with natural strength. Brown can be a printed or dyed color on bleached paper. Kraft is always brown, but brown isn't always kraft.
Can brown bags have rope handles?
Yes, and it's a common pairing for gift retail. Rope handles carry more weight than twisted paper and feel more substantial, which suits a bag customers will reuse.
Is brown cheaper than printed color?
If it's natural kraft, yes. If it's brown printed onto bleached paper, it costs more than leaving it white since you're paying for full-coverage ink across the bag.
How soon can brown paper bags be made?
About 8–12 business days once the proof is approved, whether natural kraft or printed brown. Rush production is available at a quoted premium, shipping included.
Can brown bags be reordered quickly?
Yes. With your dimensions and artwork on file, reorders need no new proof unless something changes, and most run in about 8–12 business days with rush available.
