Kraft Popcorn Boxes
Kraft popcorn boxes handle butter as well as white board does, because the grease-proof face does that job, not the underlying stock. What kraft changes is the appearance: unbleached brown that suits natural, minimally processed snack brands, best printed in one or two colors. A second color adds contrast without full-color cost. Reorders are straightforward once your artwork is on file.

Brown Because of the Pulp, Not the Ink
Kraft popcorn boxes are brown for a simple reason: the pulp was never bleached. No ink goes into that color, so the box reads as untreated board even with your logo printed on it. That matters to a specific buyer: popcorn makers who sell small-batch, air-popped or naturally flavored product and want the packaging to say so before the customer reads a word. It also suits stalls and shops whose whole counter is wood, paper and chalkboard. If your brand is bright, playful or built on exact color, this isn't your box. Kraft comes with a few honest compromises in print, and the rest of this page is clear about where they show up.
What Goes Into a Kraft Popcorn Carton
A kraft popcorn carton has two working parts: the board itself and the coating on its inner face.
| Part | What it is |
|---|---|
| Board | Unbleached paper pulp board, naturally brown |
| Inner face | Grease-proof coating for butter and oil |
| One or two inks recommended | |
| Sizing | Cut to your serving volume |
| Recyclability | Kraft recycles easily; coating type can affect it |
The coating is what stops butter reaching the fiber. Without it, kraft stains like any other uncoated board, and a dark grease ring on brown stock looks worse than you'd expect. If recyclability is a claim you plan to print, say so at quote stage so the coating is chosen to fit it.
When Kraft Beats White Board for Popcorn, and When It Doesn't
Performance isn't the reason to pick kraft, and neither is format: most are the same flat-packed tuck carton you'd get in white, with cones and tubs available too. With the same grease-proof face, brown board holds butter exactly as well as white. The reasons are look and cost. Kraft usually costs slightly less than coated board, because coated stock is bleached and treated, but that gap shrinks at volume and shouldn't decide the order on its own. Choose kraft when the natural look is the brand. Skip it when your artwork depends on exact color, photography or a bright white background, because kraft will darken all of it, and the money saved on board gets spent back in appearance.
How a Second Color Reads on Kraft
Kraft absorbs ink into the fiber rather than holding it on top, so every color dries warmer and darker than it looks on screen. One ink, usually black or a dark brand color, gives a clean stamped look. A second color adds contrast for a flavor name or a price, and on brown board it reads as a design decision rather than a budget limit. Full CMYK is possible on kraft but rarely worth paying for, since the brown base shifts every hue and fine detail goes soft. Bold line art and generous type survive the brown far better than gradients or photos do. Design for the board you're printing on, and kraft rewards you with a look coated stock can't copy.
Popcorn Stalls, Farm Shops and Bakery Counters
Farmers' market stalls and craft fairs are the core buyers, selling kettle corn or caramel popcorn by the carton next to jars and baked goods. Farm shops and delis stock them for house-made snacks. Bakeries and pastry shops often add popcorn as a counter extra and want it in the same brown, lightly printed style as their cake and pastry packaging. Gourmet popcorn brands selling online use kraft to signal small-batch production. Rustic weddings and outdoor events order kraft cones for a snack table that matches brown paper and twine. The common thread is a seller whose whole presentation already leans natural, so a glossy white carton would look out of place on the counter.
Proof, Checks and Repeat Runs on Kraft
Your first order starts at 100 boxes, with free design help to work out how your artwork will actually sit on brown stock. The proof is where kraft surprises people, so look at it with the darkening in mind rather than against your screen. After approval, production runs 8–12 business days, and rush is available at extra cost, quoted upfront, if a market date is close. Every box passes a three-stage check before dispatch, and if the bulk run doesn't match the proof you approved, we reprint at our cost. Because kraft popcorn tends to be a staple rather than a one-off, keeping your spec on file turns the next order into a confirmation, not a restart.

Does kraft affect how popcorn boxes hold grease?
It doesn't affect performance, because the grease resistance comes from the coating rather than the stock. Kraft with a grease-proof face handles butter exactly as well as white board does — the difference is only in how it looks and prints.
Can kraft popcorn boxes take a second color?
Yes, and two colors on kraft is a common and effective combination. A second color adds contrast without the cost of full CMYK, and it reads as deliberate on natural board rather than as a compromise.
Is kraft cheaper than coated board?
Usually slightly, since coated board is bleached and treated. The gap is small at volume, and the right question is what your brand needs — if accurate color matters, kraft costs you more in appearance than it saves in board.
What's the lead time on kraft popcorn boxes?
About 8–12 business days after you sign off the proof. Rush production is available at an extra cost we'll state first, with shipping included in what you pay.
Can kraft popcorn boxes be reordered quickly?
Yes. With your dimensions and artwork on file, reorders are straightforward and usually need no new proof. Most run in about 8–12 business days once confirmed.
