Black Cigarette Boxes
Black cigarette boxes show registration drift more than light stock, because misalignment reads as a visible edge on dark board, so we proof on your actual stock and hold the press settings across the run. Foil or white ink carries the logo, since regular ink prints muddy. Matte with anti-scuff film suits packs that are handled constantly. Design help is unlimited and free.

Black Cigarette Packs Built Around a Dark Surface
A black pack tells the smoker something before a word is read, which is why brands put premium and limited lines on it. It is also the least forgiving surface in the category. Every flaw a white pack hides shows on black: a scuff from a pocket, a fingerprint on the lid, a fold that cracks and shows paler fiber underneath. These boxes are for tobacco brands that want the dark look and accept that it asks more of the board, the print and the finish. The sections below cover what that means in practice, from caliper and tolerance to the one or two marks a black design carries well, and what to leave off it.
Dark Stock, Caliper and Tolerance for Black Packs
Black packs run on the same thin board as the rest of the category. Black paperboard in the 12–20pt range folds crisply into a hinge-lid without bulking at the corners.
| Spec | Black cigarette boxes |
|---|---|
| Board | Black paperboard, 12–20pt |
| Tolerance | Around ±0.3–0.5mm |
| Builds | Hinge-lid with inner frame, or shell-and-slide |
| Logo | Foil or white ink |
| Surface | Matte, with anti-scuff film for heavy handling |
| Size | Cut to your pack dimensions |
On a dark ground, a warning panel nudged out of position is the first thing the eye catches, so the tolerance carries more weight here than the board color does.
Why Black Suits a One- or Two-Mark Design
Black is the right call when the brand can be said in one or two marks. Regular ink prints muddy on dark board, so a design built on six colors and a photograph loses most of its detail, and a light pack would serve that artwork better for less money. Where black earns its place is a pack made from a logo, a line of type and the required panel, each in foil or white. The structure underneath stays a hinge-lid folding carton, the same precision fold-and-glue build as any other pack in the range, because the dark look comes from the surface rather than a heavier box. If a launch needs full color, print it on a light pack and keep black for the edition that suits it.
Foil, White Ink and Matte Film on Black Board
Four finishes do most of the work on a black pack. Hot foil gives the logo a clean edge and catches light on the shelf; kept to flat panels rather than run across the lid hinge, it stays intact as the pack opens and closes. White ink suits text that has to be read, such as product details, while foil handles the mark people should notice. A matte film keeps the surface even and makes the foil stand out, with an anti-scuff layer on top for packs carried in pockets and bags. An embossed logo on the lid adds texture without adding a color. What doesn't apply here: gloss lamination, which shows every fingerprint on black, and fine multicolor detail that ink alone can't hold on a dark ground.
Ordering Black Packs With the Proof on Your Board
Send your pack dimensions and artwork, and we build the dieline and confirm internal versus external measurements in writing. The proof is then made on black board rather than simulated on white, so foil, white ink and matte film are judged together before you sign off. Design help is unlimited and free, which includes reworking a logo drawn for light packs so it holds up in foil. Every run passes a three-stage check, and if bulk doesn't match the approved proof, we reprint at our cost. Orders start at 100 boxes, shipping is included, and dies, plates and setup are in the quote. Production takes 8–12 business days from proof approval; rush is available at an extra cost quoted upfront.

What brands say about this box
They live there rather than here, where we can't edit them, delete them, or pick which ones you get to see. That is exactly what makes them worth reading.

Will black stock hold print registration across a run?
It will if the press baseline is set for it. Dark stock shows registration drift more than light because misalignment reads as a visible edge. We proof on your actual board and hold the spec across the run.
Can black cigarette boxes take foil?
Yes, and foil is the standard choice on black. Regular ink prints muddy on dark stock, so foil or white ink is what makes a logo read cleanly. Keep it away from folds where it can crack.
Is matte or gloss better on black packs?
Matte reads more premium and makes foil stand out sharply. Gloss shows fingerprints badly on black. Most premium tobacco packaging uses matte, often with an anti-scuff film since packs are handled constantly.
How long do black cigarette boxes take?
Most orders are ready in about 8–12 business days once you approve the proof, foil included. Rush production is available at an extra cost, quoted upfront, with shipping included.
What's the minimum order for black cigarette boxes?
100 boxes. Tobacco packaging usually runs at high volume, but the low minimum lets you trial a finish or a design change before committing a full production run to it.
