Two Piece Candle Boxes

Two piece candle boxes are defined by their build, a separate lid and base, not their material, so they come in cardboard for full color, kraft for a natural look, or rigid for substantial weight. The lid lifting off creates a deliberate reveal a tuck carton can't. Magnetic closures require a rigid core underneath. Folding versions take 8–12 business days, rigid versions 20.

What a Separate Lid Changes for a Candle Line

A tuck carton is quicker at the pack bench. It ships flat, folds up in seconds and stacks tightly in storage, and for plenty of candle lines that settles the question. A two piece box asks for more: two parts to store, two parts to bring together, and a few extra seconds on every order. What you get for that effort is a box the customer opens with both hands, raising the lid straight up off a jar that hasn't moved. The brands that buy these sell candles at a price where the opening is part of what's being paid for, or sell sets where several items need to be seen at once. If neither applies, a tuck carton is the better buy, and we'll tell you so.

Two Piece Candle Box Build Sheet: Lid, Base and Stock

The build is fixed: a lid and a separate base. Everything else is chosen around your vessel. Printed versions are commonly made from printable paperboard lid stock, with kraft for a natural finish and rigid grayboard where weight matters.

Attribute Specification
Construction Separate lid and base
Stock options Coated cardboard, kraft or rigid
Rigid core 2–3mm grayboard, wrapped
Insert tolerance ±0.5mm on the cavity
Box tolerance ±1mm
Sizing Built from your jar's diameter and height

We confirm internal or external dimensions in writing before the dieline is cut, so the lid slides over the base without binding or sitting loose.

Why the Lid-and-Base Build Beats a Flap for Jar Candles

This page is defined by the build, and the build is independent of stock. A jar sits in the base, held by its insert, and the lid lifting clear of its tray exposes the whole top of the candle at once. Compare that with a tuck carton, where the customer pulls the jar out through one end, often by its lid or rim, and the insert has to let go to allow it. With a separate base, the insert keeps hold until the customer chooses to lift the jar out. The base can also be made shallower than the jar, so the vessel's shoulder and label show as soon as the lid comes off. Choose this build for the opening, then choose the stock for price and look.

Finishing the Lid, the Base Wall and the Inside

A two piece box gives you three surfaces to print, and they don't all deserve the same spend. The lid top is what's seen on the shelf and in photos, so foil or a spot finish belongs there. The lid wall covers most of the base once the box is closed, which means the base's outer wall can often stay plain and save a print pass. The interior of the lid shows the moment it comes off, a good place for a short line of copy or a pattern. What's available depends on stock: coated board takes gloss, matte or soft-touch lamination, kraft suits one or two colors, foil or blind emboss, and rigid wraps take all of these. A deep emboss needs the thickness of rigid board behind it.

Two Piece Candle Boxes for Gift Sets and Studio Lines

Two piece candle boxes show up where the candle costs enough that the box is part of the purchase. Gift sets pairing a jar with matches or a wick trimmer use a single base with a divided insert and one lid across everything. Studio and boutique lines use the build for a signature scent while keeping tuck cartons for the rest of the range. Brands selling boxed candle presents at holiday counters choose it because the box can go under the tree as it is. Wedding and event candles use small two piece boxes in kraft or white, printed with names or a date. Where a candle is a modest market-stall purchase, the extra part and extra packing time rarely pay off.

Trialing a Two Piece Build Before Switching the Range

Put one scent into a two piece build, stand it next to your existing carton, and see whether it sells faster or holds a higher price. The minimum is 100 boxes whichever stock you pick. Folding versions take 8–12 business days from proof approval and rigid versions take 20. Rush is available on both, at a cost we quote before you commit. Send us the jar dimensions and we'll draw the lid and base around them, with unlimited free revisions until the proof is right. Every box goes through a three-stage check, and if the bulk run doesn't match the signed proof, we reprint at our cost. Shipping is included, and dies, plates and setup are already in the quote.

What brands say about this box

Answers before you have to ask.

What stocks can a two piece candle box be made in?

Any of them. Two piece describes the build — a separate lid and base — not the material. You can have it in cardboard for full-color print, kraft for a natural look, or rigid for weight and premium feel.

Can a two piece box have a magnetic closure?

Yes, if it's built in rigid. A magnet needs a thick core to sit in, so it works on rigid two piece builds rather than folding cartons. On folding stock, a well-fitted lid with slight resistance does a similar job.

Is a two piece box better than a tuck carton?

For presentation, usually yes — the lid lifting off creates a moment a tuck carton doesn't. For cost and storage, the tuck carton wins since it ships flat and assembles faster. It depends which matters more for your line.

How long do two piece candle boxes take?

Folding two piece builds run about 8–12 business days from proof approval. In rigid, allow 20 business days since the board is cut, wrapped and assembled. Rush is available on both.

What's the minimum order for two piece boxes?

100 boxes, across every stock. That's low enough to trial a two piece build against your current carton before switching a range over, and design help is unlimited and free.
