Tier Cake Boxes
Tier cake boxes carry the heaviest, highest-stakes thing most bakeries box, and a top-heavy tiered cake leans the moment the base gives. Corrugated with a reinforced base and walls that resist flexing is the sensible specification. Many bakeries move tiers in separate boxes or with dividers and assemble on site. Individual commissions can be ordered from just 100 boxes.

Tier Cake Boxes for Stacked Cakes Moved in One Piece
A stacked cake moves as one tall, heavy column, and the box is the only thing keeping that column upright between the bakery and the venue. If a wall flexes when the car brakes, the top tier keeps going and the dowels inside take a load they weren't set for. Tier cake boxes are made for that ride. They hold two- and three-tier cakes, stacked semi-naked cakes and showpiece celebration cakes, and the buyers are wedding cake makers, bakeries with a commission book and decorators who deliver their own work. These orders carry the highest price and the least room for a second attempt, so the box is specified for stability before anything else is considered.
Reinforced Corrugated Specs for Stacked Tiers
Tier boxes are built on heavy-duty fluted board for stacked tiers, with the base and walls reinforced against flexing.
| Attribute | Tier cake box |
|---|---|
| Board | E- or B-flute corrugated, food-safe |
| Base | Reinforced, locking |
| Walls | Reinforced to resist flex |
| Height | Custom, to the top tier and decoration |
| Dividers | Optional, for tiers moved separately |
| Tolerance | ±1/16" (1.5mm) |
The footprint is cut to the base tier and its cake board so the stack can't slide. Heights are set per commission and confirmed with you in writing before anything is cut, including the depth of any dividers.
Why an Interlocking Base Keeps Tiers From Leaning
A tiered cake fails from the bottom up. The weight sits high, so the smallest give in the floor of the box tilts the whole stack, and once it tilts the top tier does the rest. A tuck base, held only by folded flaps, is the wrong place to save money here. Most tier cake boxes are built with an interlocking bottom that holds a stack square, its four flaps locked together so the floor stays flat under a concentrated load. Paired with reinforced corrugated walls, it gives the cake a base and sides that don't move independently of each other. When a commission is too heavy or too tall to move assembled, separate boxes per tier are the safer specification.
Keeping Print Plain on a Load-Bearing Box
On a tier box, every decision serves the structure first, and print is no exception. A logo and contact details in one or two colors are enough; most of these boxes are opened at a venue by the baker, not unwrapped by a customer at a counter. Large solid areas on corrugated can show flute lines and add cost to a box ordered in small quantities. A window can be specified so a planner or caterer can check the cake on arrival, but it should sit away from the reinforced corners and never in the base. Lamination adds nothing useful here and traps moisture around a chilled cake. If the box needs to look the part for a premium client, a clean single-color print does it.
Tier Cake Boxes for Weddings, Venue Deliveries and On-Site Assembly
Most tier boxes leave the bakery for a venue. Wedding cake bakers are the main buyers, carrying multi-tier cakes to halls, hotels and outdoor events where the cake will stand on show for hours after delivery. Many prefer to move tiers separately in a matched set and stack them on site, so the boxes are sized per tier, with dividers or as individual boxes. Others deliver assembled cakes over short distances, where one tall reinforced box carries the whole thing. Milestone birthday and anniversary cakes and corporate celebration cakes follow the same pattern. Event planners and caterers sometimes order on a baker's behalf to keep the delivery packaging consistent across a long event day.
Ordering Tier Boxes Commission by Commission
Tier boxes tend to be ordered for specific cakes rather than kept in stock, so the process is built around a commission. Send us each tier's diameter, the total height and whether the cake travels assembled or in parts, and we'll build the dielines and confirm the dimensions in writing. Design help and revisions are free; runs start at 100. Production takes 8–12 business days from proof approval, reinforced bases included, so order with the event date in mind; rush is available at extra cost, quoted upfront. Each box passes a three-stage check before dispatch, which on a box carrying this much weight is where faults need catching. A bulk run that doesn't match its approved proof is reprinted at our cost, with shipping included as on every order.

How do you stop a tiered cake leaning?
With a reinforced base and walls that resist flexing. A tiered cake is top-heavy, so any give in the base lets it lean and the tiers shift. Corrugated or a locking base is essential here.
Can tier boxes hold separate tiers?
Yes, with dividers or as separate boxes in a set. Many bakeries transport tiers separately and assemble on site, which is safer than moving an assembled tiered cake.
Do tier boxes need a heavier board?
Almost always. A tiered cake is the heaviest thing most bakeries box, and the consequence of failure is the highest. Corrugated with a reinforced base is the sensible specification.
What's the turnaround on tier cake boxes?
About 8–12 business days from proof approval, including reinforced bases. Rush production is available at an extra cost stated upfront, with shipping included.
What's the minimum on tier cake boxes?
100 boxes. Tier boxes are usually ordered for specific commissions rather than daily service, so the low minimum makes one-off runs practical.
