Compostable Bakery Boxes
Compostable bakery boxes suit bakeries that want a disposal claim with a defined standard behind it, which biodegradable doesn't offer. Most compostable board is specified for commercial composting rather than a home heap, so tell us which claim you plan to make. Food safety still applies separately: food-grade board and food-safe inks. Trial runs start at just 100 boxes.

Compostable Bakery Boxes for a Disposal Claim You Can Back Up
Printing "compostable" on a box is a claim your bakery makes to customers, and it needs to hold up if someone asks how. These boxes are bought by businesses ready to make that claim and wanting the packaging specified to support it: bakeries with a sustainability pledge on the menu board, cafés that have dropped plastic, wholesale suppliers whose café clients asked for it, and caterers working events that set rules about waste. The decision usually starts with the claim and works backward to the board, the coating and the inks, rather than starting with a box and hoping the wording fits afterward.
Compostable Bakery Box Specs: Board, Coating and Inks
These boxes use board specified for commercial composting, commonly on an unbleached kraft base.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Board | Specified for commercial composting, 18–24pt |
| Inside face | Grease-resistant coating chosen to suit the claim |
| Inks | Food-safe on every surface |
| Window | Discuss before adding |
| Size | Cut to your product's dimensions |
Every element of the box is part of the claim, not only the board. The coating, the inks and any added film each count, so tell us the exact wording you plan to print and we'll specify each part against it. Fit is held to around ±1/16" (1.5mm).
Compostable Versus Biodegradable for Bakery Packaging
The two words get used interchangeably, and they shouldn't be. Compostable means the material meets a defined standard for breaking down under composting conditions. Biodegradable has no standard behind it at all, which makes it the weaker word to put on a box and the easier one to have questioned. These boxes are commonly made as a simple folding carton build, with nothing added that the claim would need to account for. Be honest about where the box will end up, too. If most customers will put it in general waste, compostable board does little in practice, and a plain recyclable kraft box may be the more truthful choice for your counter.
Print Choices That Stay Inside the Board Spec
Keep the print simple and the materials few. One- or two-color print on the natural board is the usual approach, and it suits the look buyers of this box tend to want anyway. Food-safe inks are a requirement on any surface near product. Skip lamination: it puts a film layer over the board, and that layer would need to meet the claim as well. A film window raises the same question, so we'll talk it through before adding one rather than after. The most important thing printed on the box is the claim itself. Word it exactly as you'll stand behind it, and check that wording on the proof, since confirming the claim you make is your responsibility.
Compostable Boxes for Low-Waste Cafés and Food Brands
Low-waste cafés are the most common buyer, usually as part of a wider switch away from plastic cups and cutlery. Bakeries with a sustainability page on their website use them so the packaging matches what the site promises. Wholesale bakers use them when a café or grocer they supply has set a packaging rule and passed it down. Event caterers use them at venues that sort waste on site. If the bakery line sits inside a wider food packaging range, the same board spec can be carried across other boxes so the claim stays consistent from one product to the next.
What to Confirm Before a Compostable Run
Three things need settling before production: the exact claim wording, whether any film or window is involved, and the sizes. With those confirmed, we spec the board and coating and send a proof with the claim set in place, so you're checking the words and the box together. Production runs 8–12 business days from approval, and rush is available at extra cost, quoted upfront. Every box passes a three-stage check. On orders above 10,000 boxes, free samples are included, which is the right moment to hand some to the café or grocer you supply before the full range goes out. The price you approve already covers delivery.

Are compostable boxes home or commercial compostable?
Most compostable board is specified for commercial composting, which reaches higher temperatures than a home heap. If you need a home-compostable claim specifically, tell us — it's a stricter and separate standard.
Are compostable boxes food-safe?
Yes. The food-safe requirement and the compostable claim are separate specifications that apply together — a compostable box still uses food-grade board and food-safe inks on any surface touching product.
Do compostable boxes cost more?
Usually somewhat, since specialty stock costs more than standard board. The gap narrows at volume, and for many bakeries the retailer and customer response offsets it. We'll quote both so you can weigh it directly.
How long do compostable boxes take?
Around 8–12 business days from proof approval. Sourcing specialty stock occasionally adds a little at the front end, and we'll tell you if so. Rush is available at a quoted premium.
Can compostable boxes be ordered at minimum?
Yes, 100 boxes, the same as standard stock. That lets you trial the board with your actual product before switching a whole range across, which we'd recommend.
